Research has demonstrated that in addition to cognitive factors, addressing non-cognitive factors are key to improving success for all students and is particularly promising for diverse and traditionally disadvantaged college populations. This includes academically-underprepared, first-generation and low-SES students. Coaching is also a particularly powerful tool during life transitions such as those experienced by university students.  Because millennial and generation z value personal development that meaningfully engages and enables them to find their own solutions, coaching has proven to be an effective success and retention tool in university settings.

Due to limited resources and increasingly complex student demographics and issues, institutions are relying on peer mentors / coaches to empower students to succeed both academically and socially.  Peer coaches help to improve success for all students –particularly diverse and traditionally disadvantaged college populations by increasing their engagement, retention, and graduation rates.

A well-defined peer coaching program accelerates students’ overall success, eases their transition to university life and fosters the development of the key skills (like resilience) and connections that will help them persist to graduation.

“Retention initiatives designed to manage student enrollment are estimated to be 3-5 times more cost-effective than recruitment efforts i.e. it takes 3-5 times as much money to recruit a new student than it does to retain an already-enrolled student (Cuseo,2010).”
